Narrator:  (Overture 5:37)

There was a legend that spoke of a tormented spirit who roamed an old manor within the moors.  He could be seen by the light of the moon, wandering alone like a solitary candle, burning in the night.  It was said that he bore the weight of a past transgression, a misdeed that was born out of fury and passion.  No one knew exactly what his sin was, but it must have been an act of unspeakable evil.  For many years he had been heard moaning softly from a window or wailing wickedly into the winds.  The few that had witnessed the ghastly apparition said he wore the suit, cloak and tophat of a gentleman.  And although the clothes were that of a nobleman they had long since deteriorated into a tattered and torn mess.  His face, by their claims, was ashen with the skin thin and taut about his skull, giving him the appearance of the undead.  Finally, he was said to have an eerie gray aura about his body that looked like fog glowing in the moonlight.  All the people from the surrounding villages were terrified of him, so terrified that they never went into the moors.

Cyrus Saint Leviticus (guitar)

(Overture 8:00)

Narrator:

The grandfather clock in the corner chimed its twelve o’clock warning and the awakening began as it had for decades.  A slight breeze was the only sound to be heard.  Each and every candle throughout the manor lit in unison, casting orange and yellow shadows upon the wooden walls.  Then the hounds undertook their song, calling deep into the night.  At the top of the highest tower a dull haze came into view.  Slowly it twisted and turned, churning into a wispy form.  Again the ghost made his rounds across the moors.

Introducing the Doctors (segue)

Narrator:

Riding in a coach toward a homely inn were three men, doctors to be exact.  One was a doctor of medicine, one a doctor of psychology, the last a doctor of chemistry.  They were coming to the moors to investigate the local superstition of the haunted manor and its lost soul inhabitant.  Of the three none would admit any fear of the dead or of spirits.  That was all nonsense to them.  However, their feelings would soon be put to the test and challenged beyond anything they could possibly imagine.

(Introducing the Doctors  :58)

Narrator:

It started to rain quite heavily on the road on which they traveled and before long became impossible to pass.  The ground turned into a thick and soupy mess of mud.  There was the sound of splintering wood.  A wheel snapped off its hub and the coach sank deeply in the ever-thickening goo.

Dr. Williamson:

“I say, what the devil goes on out there driver?”

Driver:

“We’ve lost a wheel, Govner.”

Dr. Williamson:

“Can you fix the blasted thing?”

Driver:

“Course I can fix it.  It’ll take a bit o’ time though.”

Dr. Shelley:

“This is all we need, another confounded delay.  I must say that this is getting to be too much of an ordeal.”

Dr. Tate:

“Well, what did you expect to befall us?  We’re chasing ghosts for goodness sake.”

Dr. Williamson:

“The two of you can be quite intolerable.  Have you absolutely no presence of mind?  Before you know it the driver will have us repaired and back on our way.  You must really learn to relax.”

Narrator:

Roughly an hour had passed and they were once again headed for the village closest the moors.

Coach Ride

Dr. Williamson and Dr.Tate:

The rain is coming down

And the lightning fills the air

Horses are racing,

The chill of the night air,

Driving them on

We don’t want to be caught

Out in the night

Dr. Williamson:

Winds are howling

Their unholy cry,

Warning us to turn away

Thunder cracks the stormy skies

In angry protest

I see the inn appear before us

I see the light of a fire within

Morning Tea segue (segue)

Narrator:

The smell of freshly baked bread and chamomile tea brought the doctors out of their slumbers.  They hastily dressed and rushed down to the dining area for breakfast.  Mr. Lawrence, the innkeeper broke the silence as they sat down for their morning meal.

Mr. Lawrence:

“Did you gentlemen sleep well?  I do hope you enjoyed your first night here.”

The Night Before (5:05)

 Dr. Tate:

“I couldn’t sleep at all what with the wind and rain.  I thrashed about all night.”

Dr. Shelley:

“You’re quite right.  Yes, I would think that one should have the decency to keep the vile sounds of the night outside of the inn.”

Dr. Williamson:

“Really, really, please gentlemen you sound like children.”

Dr. Tate:

“Do we, then how was your night then?”

Inn Keeper:

“My good men, there is no need to be upset with one another.  I will arrange to have Dr. Shelley and Dr. Tate moved to a more quiet location in the inn.”

Dr. Shelley:

“Ah!  You’ll do no such thing.  We are perfectly placed right where we are presently.  Forgive us please.  The three of us have a nasty little habit of quibbling with each other.  I assure that we will endeavor to keep it amongst ourselves from now on.

Inn Keeper:

“Very well then.”

Narrator:

With breakfast finished they then returned to their rooms and prepared for the journey to the manor later that evening.

The Haunted Manor

Narrator:

There they stood, alone, out in the darkness of the night.  The villagers were already hidden away in their homes, cowering like sheep in a field of wolves.  Light from the doctor’s torches burned brightly, giving them sufficient glow with which to see.  Without a word they began their trek into the moors and to the haunted manor.  The hour was half past eleven.  Soon they would be at the gates of that cursed house.

A strong breeze came out of the east, whipping about their cloaks, forcing them to hold onto their hats.  Only the sound of tree branches and blowing leaves could be heard.  As they entered the moors darkness enclosed around them, seeming to swallow the men whole.  The footing was treacherous due to the soggy ground upon which they walked.

Then it was there, looming ominously in front of the three doctors.  It was more horrifying than any of the three thought it would be.  Ivy vines and other curious forms of vegetation hung about its entire frame, enshrouding it in a thick layer of dark green that had the appearance of a living monster.  The very walls seemed to writhe with every current of wind.  It looked deserted, like an empty shell.  There was life on the outside, as minute as it was but no life within.  It was soulless.

Determination (segue :13)

Narrator:

Over a freshly brewed pot of tea and several snifters of Brandy the three doctors decided to return to the manor and confront the evil spirit.  Staring deeply into the fire that blazed in the hearth, Dr. Williamson proclaimed,

Dr. Williamson:

“I will not rest until we see that monster destroyed. “

Return to the Manor

Narrator:

The next day was spent in preparations for their return trip to the haunted manor.  Torches that had been blessed by the local vicar were purchased.   Dr. Williamson obtained an object in secret that he didn’t tell the others of.  It was a small pistol that he hid inside his vest pocket.  It made him feel a little bit more secure, although he had little doubt as to the affect it might have upon a ghost.

Ghost:

Once again they enter my sacred place

To confront their darkest fears and

Apparition ( :49)

Narrator:

As the doctors walked down the dimly lit halls of the manor an eerie feeling came over them.  They stopped just short of an enormous fireplace. They looked at one another eager to put an end to the terrifying evening.  Watching and waiting with intense agitation they scanned the room for the ghost.  Before their eyes a swirling gray mist emerged out of thin air, twisting and weaving in wispy shapes, slowly forming into the figure of a man.  Wicked expressions of tormented glee crossed the face of the vile specter.  Clearly he was prepared to meet them head on and with delight.  The three doctors steeled their courage and advanced toward the ghost torches raised in their shaking hands.   They too were ready for the challenge.
